Jordan Smith Talks About His Vision for His New Album & Singing the National Anthem

Two weeks ago, Jordan Smith took home the crown from Season 9's the Voice. Though the show is over, the Church of God member is far from resting. Recently, he sang his #1 Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart hit "Mary Did You Know" at Saddleback Community Church at their Christmas services. He was also interviewed by the megachurch's lead pastor Rick Warren.
Now, Smith speaks to ChristianToday about the vision he has for his upcoming album: "I want to make music that people connect with. I think there are songs out there that when you hear them, they bring you back to a certain place. I want to make music like that. I think I've learned on the show just how powerful music can be when it comes from your heart and means something to you," he said.
Smith admitted that he never really considered himself as a performer, only a singer. He initially thought that he would have zero chances of making it onto the show, but life has a way of surprising people.
"When I sang 'Halo' in the Live Playoffs, (coach) Adam (Levine) and I changed up the arrangement and decided to do something different with the song. That's the first time I really saw that I had something to say as an artist," he reflected. "I saw myself as an artist from that point on. Then I tried to cultivate that good attitude and keep that momentum going for the rest of the show and build up my self-confidence as a performer."
Moreover, Smith will sing the National Anthem to Big Blue fans at Rupp Arena this weekend. On his Facebook page, Smith announced he will sing the National Anthem before the UK-Ole Miss game on Saturday night. He says he's a huge UK fan and singing at the game is another dream come true.
He writes:"Happy Tuesday, #TeamJordan! I have some super exciting news that I've been dying to tell you!
Firstly, I will be singing the National Anthem at the NHL Winter Classic in Boston, MA this Friday! The game will be televised on NBC starting at 1pm EST. This is a huge opportunity and will be tons of fun, so be sure to tune in!
Secondly, I will also be singing the National Anthem at the UK Basketball game this Saturday, Jan. 2nd, at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY. I have always been a huge Cats fan, so singing at this game is another dream come true!
Lots more big things are in store for 2016 and I can't wait to share them with you. Stay tuned for more info on what's to come!"
