"Sex Tape" Starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel Opens Tonight in Theaters and is Sending a Much Different Message Than You May Think
"Sex Tape," starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel, premieres in theaters tonight at midnight. The title of the movie promises everything salacious and scandalous, and yet the film seems to send the exact opposite message.
Diaz and Segel play married couple Annie and Jay, who seem much like other couples in that kids, married life, and careers seem to have taken a toll on the romantic side of their life together. So when the kids are away, the parents will play...and they do, making a sex tape with the help of booze and a copy of "The Joy of Sex." The pair are horrified when they discover that somehow their foray into new sexual territory has been transmitted to all of their secondhand iPads that they gave as gifts to various friends, family, bosses...even the mailman. While the premise may be a bit unlikely, the plot touches on the real panic that any modern day technology user may feel when they have inadvertently made their private life public (as many celebrities can tell you).
However, something about the film just simply is not right. Annie and Jay spend the entire movie scrambling to collect the various tablets before they can be exploited, ducking embarassment and trying to avoid public humiliation at all costs.
While it is highly unlikely that this scenario would play out to this extent, would it really be so wrong? Even the most conservative viewer must admit that Annie and Jay are a legally married couple, and fully within their rights to rev up their sex life in whatever way they see fit (with both consenting, of course).
The makers of "Sex Tape" are clearly attempting to do something new with the concept of the romantic comedy; rather than the long line of traditional rom-com stories we've come to expect, this one tries to go where none has gone before. In a world where nude selfies and celebrity sex tapes are the norm, the "disastrous" twist upon which this film revolves just simply does not serve to propel the film into real conflict.
