James C. Dobson, Founder of Focus on the Family and Influential Christian Leader, Dies at 89

Dr. James C. Dobson, the internationally recognized Christian psychologist, author, and founder of Focus on the Family, passed away peacefully at his home in Colorado Springs on Thursday, August 21, 2025. He was 89 years old.
Dr. Dobson's work over more than five decades shaped the landscape of American evangelical life and family ministry. A trained child psychologist, he first came to national prominence with his 1970 book Dare to Discipline, which outlined a Christian approach to child-rearing. In 1977, he founded Focus on the Family, an organization dedicated to strengthening marriages, equipping parents, and promoting biblical values.
Under his leadership, Focus on the Family grew into one of the most influential Christian media and advocacy organizations in the world, producing radio programs, resources, and outreach that reached millions of households. After stepping down from the ministry in 2010, Dr. Dobson continued his work through the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute.
"Dr. Dobson's voice was unwavering in his commitment to the gospel and to strengthening the family," said [insert spokesperson or family member]. "His life's work has touched countless lives, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations."
Throughout his career, Dr. Dobson authored more than 30 books, counseled U.S. presidents, and was a leading voice in the evangelical movement. His influence extended into the public square, where he was both celebrated and challenged for his advocacy on social and moral issues.
Dr. Dobson is survived by his wife, Shirley, their two children, and several grandchildren. Funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
