Katy Perry Fans Wish Super Bowl Halftime Show Wardrobe Malfunction; Rihanna, Coldplay Out
"This Is How We Do" singer Katy Perry was confirmed to play the NFL Super Bowl XLIX halftime show, sources confirmed to Page Six.
"A deal is being hammered out for Katy to play the Super Bowl," an insider said.
The NFL reportedly selected Perry over Rihanna and Coldplay because her pop brand may help save the reputation of the league, which has been tainted recently by issues on player safety and domestic abuse.
Also, as compared to Bruno Mars in 2013, Perry could perform more hits during an act due to her more flexible schedule during the Super Bowl, which will air on Feb. 1, 2015 on NBC. She is not set to perform in any shows in 2015 until Feb. 16.
In 2013, the Super Bowl had a record-breaking audience of 111.5 million viewers.
Moreover, unlike Rihanna, Perry is said to be family friendly and she is less likely to make a scene similar to Janet Jackson's so-called wardrobe malfunction in 2004 and M.I.A.'s bird-flipping incident in 2012.
However, several fans took to Twitter to request a "wardrobe malfunction" from Perry, who happens to be the most followed person on Twitter with 58.1 million followers at present.
"Katy Perry for Super Bowl Halftime......can we get a wardrobe malfunction PLS??" James Tyron wrote.
Similarly, Peyton's Head tweeted, "Katy Perry is doing the Super Bowl halftime show. Come on, wardrobe malfunction!"
Another Twitter user Colin Daniels wrote, "please, please wardrobe malfunction....RT @Deadspin: Report: NFL chooses Katy Perry to perform Super Bowl halftime show."
Eli Jordan also wrote, "*crosses fingers* KATY PERRY WARDROBE MALFUNCTION... KATY PERRY WARDROBE MALFUNCTION... KATY PERRY WARDROBE MALFUNCTION. #SuperBowl."
Perry's reps have yet to comment on her upcoming Super Bowl performance.
Meanwhile, Perry recently slammed rumor that the NFL asks artists to pay the league for them to get the chance to play on the Super Bowl sponsored by Pepsi, which previously helped promote Perry's "Part of Me."
"I'm not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl," Perry commented while the NFL said artists' negotiations with the league are confidential.
Other recent Super Bowl performers include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beyonce Knowles, Destiny's Child, Madonna, LMFAO, Cirque du Soleil, Nicki Minaj, Cee Lo Green, Andy Lewis, The Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Slash, The Who and Bruce Springsteen among others.
