Oscar Pistorius Sentencing Latest News: Oscar Pistorius Is Sentenced To Five Years In Jail For The Murder Of His Girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp
We have the latest news for you on Oscar Pistorius sentencing. After a long trial that has been tiresome for lawyers and has kept the family of the defendant unease, Oscar Pistorius finally has received his conviction and it was under the hands of Judge Thokozile Masipa. The South African athlete was accused of first degree murder as he killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, according to BBC news.
In addition to his sentence Pistorius was also given a three year suspended sentence for a firearm charge, this was all given by Judge Thokozile Masipa. In an interview conducted by BBC news, Parents to the convict, Pistorius expressed their relief and joy as now the case was over. However, the defense revealed that they expected Pistorius to serve about 10 months in prison. The case proceeding went on and ended with Pistorius being convicted of culpable homicide but was cleared of murder. In the case the prosecutor had declared a minimum 10-year sentence to be given while the defense were pleading arguing in regards to community service and house arrest.
The defense lawyer, Barry Roux opened up and revealed that his client was expected to serve only 10 months in prison, with the remainder of his sentence on house arrest. Dup De Bruyn, a lawyer to the Steenkamp family opened up to the media and said, "Justice was served" although in his opinion he thinks Pistorius will probably serve two years only, according to News 24 reports.
All the family of Steenkamp can do now is to try and be satisfied with the sentence given as the case has dragged on for quite some time now.
Pistorius's uncle, Arnold said, "We accept the judgment. Oscar will embrace the opportunity to pay back to society." He further appealed to the media in regards to those opposed to the ruling by Judge Thokozile Masipa, "Accept the ruling of court and let us move forward in this process and give us some degree of dignity and privacy."
The uncle further confirmed that the whole family would join in to support the athlete, Pistorius, and help him get through this time as he serves his time behind bars.
